According to Paul Turner, author of
Joseph RamŽe: International Architect of the
Revolutionary Era, the first "comprehensively
planned campus" in the U.S. was Union
College in Schenectady, N.Y., 1813 (site
plan pictured). Ramée (1764-1842) was a
French landscape architect (also an architect
and interior designer) who looked to ancient
Greece and Rome for design inspiration.
