March 2017 121 I n f o r m a t i o n R e q u e s t # 6 3 4 Joe Turner Bids Adieu to Houston Parks & Rec Joe Turner, a native Houstonian and director of the Houston Parks and Recreation Department, has announced his retirement. Appointed to the position in July 2004 by Houston Mayor Bill White, Turner was asked to continue on as director of the department under Mayor Annise Parker's administration in 2010. Turner, who had an executive MBA, was responsible for overseeing the stewardship of the city's parkland, urban forests and greenspace, park facilities and buildings; recreational programming and activities; parks budget management and facilities management practices. He administered a staff of 700 full-time, part-time, and seasonal employees. He guided the department 2008 accreditation with the National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA) and its reaccreditation in 2013. Turner is a NRPA board member, and a member of the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration, the Texas Recreation and Parks Society, the Greater Gulf Coast Parks and Recreation Director's Association, the Heritage Society, Hermann Park Conservancy, Memorial Park Conservancy, Buffalo Bayou Partnership, Trees for Houston and the Houston Parks Board. Horticultural Research Institute Announces Scholarships Brandon Miller, Iowa State University, Justin Schulze, Oregon State University and Nicholas Robinson, University of Connecticut, each received $3,000 in scholarship funding.
