Atlantic City Boardwalk Sycamore Avenue and Refugio Valley Road, Hercules, Calif. 50 Landscape Architect and Specifier News Left Portions of busy Sycamore Avenue and Refugio Valley Road in Hercules, Calif. pop. (24,060), located on the eastern shores of San Pablo Bay between San Francisco and Napa, used to be illuminated with 161 cobra-head type luminaires with 100-watt high pressure sodium lamps. Hercules retrofitted the units with contemporary styled LED luminaires. Prismatic glass optics protect the LEDs, control light distribution and reduce glare, while saving nearly 40 percent on energy usage. The luminaires are in the median atop existing but highly serviceable 30-foot fiberglass poles with six-foot twin arms. The poles are spaced 170 feet apart. The project was funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act through the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant Program.
