Seal Rock Healthcare, Saco, Maine Above & Left: Seal Rock Healthcare is a nursing home in Saco, Maine. The site was carefully planned for future expansion and designed to maximize solar exposure. Seal Rock is aptly named, as these large rocks resemble those found at the nearby ocean shore. The significant amount of ledge on this high-density site was turned into a design solution; instead of a removing the ledge from the site, the design team reused blasted ledge rock for boulder built walls and crushed rock fill. The natural boulder walls along the edge of the facility gives visitors, residents and staff a welcoming feel as they approach the nursing facility. The building and site were designed so that residents can use the patio, decks on the second floor and walking paths accessible from the neighborhoods. These paths loop around the building and connect all exterior spaces to provide a continuous walking experience and views of the site's natural beauty. Extra buffers, including fencing and landscaping, were designed to retain view sheds and minimize noise.
