106 Landscape Architect and Specifier News Reich Associates Baton Rouge, Louisiana Assisi Garden, Baton Rouge, Louisiana Above & Left: Assisi Garden presented challenges and opportunities to develop a design that was visually stimulating, spiritually inspiring and sustainable. The project's confinement to a narrow space between a multi- level parking garage and a new patient tower needed to be softened and buffered. This canyon-like void was designed with a pedestrian-friendly plaza-courtyard enriched with water features, plantings, specialty pavers and materials. It also has spaces for outdoor dining and seating. The garden is beautiful and serene at the pedestrian level, and presents an equally pleasant view from all levels of the nearby patient tower. Reich Associates is the oldest operating landscape architecture firm in Louisiana. Dr. Robert S. Reich opened the office in the 1940s, shortly after starting the landscape architecture program at Louisiana State University, later named the Robert Reich School of Landscape Architecture in his honor. Robert's son, Bill Reich, ASLA, PLA, now owns the firm, which is well versed in all aspects of landscape architecture, including site design, land planning, urban design and sustainability. Many of its projects have received awards from the ASLA, AIA and the city of Baton Rouge.
