198 Landscape Architect and Specifier News I n f o r m a t i o n R e q u e s t # 6 5 3 ASU Issues World's First Biomimicry Degree The first students of the Biomimicry Master's degree at Arizona State University recently graduated in June. This is the first degree of its kind to be issued. Biomimicry is an emerging field that seeks to provide design solutions that emulate natural phenomena. It started with the publication of the book Biomimicry: Innovation Inspired by Nature, by Janine Benyus, which sparked an interest in the idea. Real world demand led Benyus to team up with Dr. Dayna Baumeister to found the firm Biomimicry 3.8 (B3.8), which has worked with such clients as Nike and Coca-Cola. The two now teach at ASU, with which B3.8 has partnered to create the Biomimicry Center. Biomimicry students study engineering, science and design, and use their knowledge of biology to create real-world solutions, such as more efficient climate control in buildings learned from studying termite mounds. Biomimicry promises to bring exciting innovations to many industries. Imitation is the Highest Form of… Design? The basic premise of biomimicry is that science should look to nature. Termite mounds, for example, have inspired designs for more efficient climate control in hi-rise buildings. Solar Power Installations Continue to Rise at Record Numbers The second quarter of 2016 saw a 43% growth of solar photovoltaic installed in the U.S. About 53% of this comes from utility installations, while residential rooftop installations have reached the 1 million mark. Tom Kimbis, interim president of the Solar Energy Industries Association, remarked, "While it took us 40 years to hit 1 million U.S. solar installations, we're expected to hit 2 million within the next two years. That record-breaking growth is made possible by solar's cost-competitiveness and the vast benefits it provides consumers, our nation's economy and environment." California accounted for 42% of the rooftop installations, although it represents a slowdown for the state as others like Texas have increased their demand for P.V. Solar power has continually been on the rise since the 90s, and shows no signs of slowing down. In 2009, the world's total P.V. capacity was about 23 G.W. In 2015, the U.S. alone had about 25 G.W. of P.V. capacity Green Tech Media research predicts that 13.9 more G.W. will come online in the U.S. in 2016. Rise and Shine According to the SEIA, 26 percent of all new electric generating capacity installed in the U.S. during the first half of the year came from solar power.
