April 2017 29 Band shells, like the Hollywood Bowl (1922), are famous for their acoustics. The 6,800-seat Ascend Amphitheater, designed by Smith Gee Studio and Hodgetts+Fung, is one of only a handful of outdoor "electronic shells" that match the natural acoustics of a shell through digital signal processing and loudspeakers.
