Arachnid Smörgåsbord—Food for Thought PHOTO: CREATIVE COMMONS, SHAREALIKE 3.0 "An estimated 400–800 million metric tons of prey are annually killed by the global spider community," is the title of a curious statistical-based article in Science of Nature . Spiders in forests and grasslands account for more than 95% of this carnivorous uber consumption. The low end of that consumption, 400 million metric tons (metric ton=2,204.62 lbs.), is equal to how much meat and fish the 7+ billion humans on the planet consume each year. It's amazing to think spiders eat more biomass than humans. As the human population weighs in at only about 316 million tons, arachnids, if they mobilize and focus on humans, could eat us all in a year and still be hungry. The global average spider density stands at about 131 spiders per square meter.
