The Wolf River Greenway not only intersects with area trails, but provides access to the largest urban park in the U.S., Shelby Farms Park (five times the area of Central Park in New York City). PlayCore ( www.playcore.com ) has partnered with 8 80 Cities ( www.880cities. org ) to bring this resource to communities. The research, planning tools and case studies in Shift into Gear can assist cities and communities in advocating for, building and maintaining cycling infrastructure. This resource is organized into five sections: 1. Making the Case for Bicycling 2. Planning and Design: Building a Network 3. Promoting Bike-Friendly Communities 4. Policy and Funding: Turning Advocacy into Action 5. Call to Action & Case Studies An appendix offers an extensive list of cycling related resources. Bicycling, long a means of mass transportation in the East, has been seen state side as something for kids to do and an occasional exercise recreational activity for adults. This perception has begun to shift a bit in the U.S. Bicycling, at least in the view of some city planners, is increasingly seen as viable means of transport a significant number of people in a healthy, convenient, economical and sustainable way. No one doubts the health and fitness benefits of cycling, and of course it's environmentally friendly. However, most adults don't feel safe riding on roads designed for cars. For people to take to the road on bikes in significant numbers, they need at the very least dedicated bike lanes. And bike trails, free of motor vehicles, are clearly the most ideal. Planning bike-friendly cities and communities makes sense. Shift Into Gear includes a variety of case studies illustrating communities that have integrated successful bicycling programs.
