The project team had to overcome significant challenges, as many characteristics of the site were not typical of a softball complex. The most prominent characteristic was the 40-foot grade change across the site. This dictated a design approach that required placing the fields onto three terraces—all on different levels—with the upper terrace providing a picturesque view of the entire complex. A large petroleum pipeline traversing the site presented another challenge, which required construction and grading be limited to the pipeline easement. This obstruction was met by locating two fields on either side of the pipeline at a lower elevation than the pipeline, which resulted in a grass berm between the fields that is used for spectator seating. Mitigation of methane gas migration had to be considered from the adjacent capped landfill. A system was designed to create a barrier at the subgrade level for all structural foundations and at all utility penetrations to minimize the potential migration of methane gas. In addition, the design included sealed electrical system components to separate spark conditions from possible explosive gases. The site also drains to an existing wetland area that surrounds an existing sinkhole. Environmental permitting services were provided by S&ME;, who assisted by providing Class V injection well permitting services for the stormwater discharge to the sinkhole. Two detention ponds were designed to capture and filter stormwater runoff from the site before it is conveyed into the wetland/sinkhole in a manner Top & Bottom Right: The picnic areas for the fields feature artificial turf and 'Country Manor' (Belgard) segmental retaining/ seat wall planters with 4" x 8" tumbled pavers.
