84 Landscape Architect and Specifier News I n f o r m a t i o n R e q u e s t # 5 3 5 NRPA Board Appointments Jack Kardys, NRPA's new board chairman, was formerly director of the Miami-Dade Parks, Rec. & Open Spaces Dept. He is president of J Kardys Strategies, and president of the Florida Recreation and Park Association. The National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) announced its 2018– 2019 board of directors on May 23, 2018. Long-time board member Jack Kardys will serve as chairman. Three new board members were also announced and will serve 3-year terms: • Carol Coletta, senior fellow, Kresge Foundation's American Cities Practice • Joshua Medeiros, director of recreation, Cheshire, Conn.; adjunct professor, Southern Connecticut State University • Greg Weitzel, director, Dept. of Parks and Recreation, Idaho Falls, Idaho Two board members, already serving one-year terms, were elected to serve three-year terms: • Kong Chang, community recreation specialist, Saint Paul Parks and Rec. • Nonet Sykes, chief equity and inclusion officer, Atlanta BeltLine The other professionals currently serving on the board are: • Michael Abbaté, FASLA, former director, Portland Parks & Rec. • Jesús Aguirre, COO, Tower Steel Services • Leon Andrews Jr., director, Race, Equity And Leadership, National League of Cities • Neelay Bhatt, VP, PROS Consulting • Hayden Brooks, chair, American Realty Corp. • Kevin Coyle, VP of education, National Wildlife Federation • Richard Gulley, board member, Balboa Park Conservancy • Roslyn Johnson, deputy director of facility operations, Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, Prince Georges County, Md. • Michael Kelly, general superintendent/ CEO, Chicago Park District • Karen Bates Kress, park advocate • Carolyn McKnight, superintendent, Recreation and Park Commission, East Baton Rouge Parish • Herman Parker, director, San Diego Park and Rec. Dept. • Ian Proud, market research and inclusive play manager, PlayPower • Molly Stevens, CEO/executive director, Westcave Outdoor Discovery Center • Xavier Urrutia, director, San Antonio Parks and Rec Dept. • Dr. Howell Wechsler, CEO, Alliance for a Healthier Generation Note: The 2018 NRPA Annual Conference is Sept. 25–27 in Indianapolis. Smithsonian "Full Up" Less than 1% of the treasures amassed by the Smithsonian's Natural History Museum over more than 100 years is currently on display. All the rest is stored 6 miles away, and that's full. The Smithsonian will need 12,000 sq. ft. of additional storage space every year to house new pieces.
