118 Landscape Architect and Specifier News I n f o r m a t i o n R e q u e s t # 7 5 0 On Thursday evening, Feb. 13, after the first day session of the LA Expo in Long Beach, Calif., there was a charity event to raise money for the scholarship fund of the Landscape Architecture Foundation (LAF) http://www.lafoundation.org at Parker's Lighthouse in Long Beach Harbor. The event sponsors were ValleyCrest Landscape Companies (gold); Ironsmith and LASN (silver); Scofield and SWG Trees (bronze). USA Shade & Fabric Structures, Old Town Fiberglass and Rain Bird were patron sponsors. George Schmok, publisher of Landscape Communications (LASN magazine and Landscape Contractor / Design Build Maintain magazine), and owner of the LA Expo, welcomed the guests and thanked the sponsors. Mr. Schmok introduced Barbara Deutsch, FASLA, executive director of LAF, who thanked the guests for supporting landscape architecture education. She spoke about the importance of landscape architects quantifying their sustainable landscape designs to clients through scientific metrics and case studies. LAF's online Landscape Performance Series is just such an interactive resource. Ms. Deutsch introduced the evening's panel discussion, "Leadership in Landscape Architecture: Research & Results," featuring Susan Goltsman, FASLA, president/ principal, MIG, Stephanie Landregan, PLA, FASLA LEED AP, director for the landscape architecture program at UCLA Extension, and Mia Lehrer, MLA, FASLA, of Mia Lehrer + Associates, L.A. Mia Lehrer said LAF is giving landscape architects the information they need to quantify what they do. Stephanie Landregan said she teaches students that their environment- friendly, sustainable designs will help "save the world." Susan Goltsman agreed that fact-based research was important, but that landscape architects also need to partner with researchers and vendors. The audience had a number of comments for the panel. Marty McPhee of Park West Landscape, Inc., encouraged landscape architects not to be afraid to ask the contractor or engineer if a design can be built.
