The highest honor of the San Diego ASLA Chapter, the President's Award, went to the Charles David Keeling Apartments at U.C. San Diego's Revelle College, designed by Spurlock Poirier Landscape Architects. The LEED platinum project features an expansive roof with more than 4,000 plants that capture stormwater and provide thermal insulation. The project is named for the late Scripps Institution of Oceanography professor who created the "Keeling curve," which measures the progressive buildup of greenhouse gas in the atmosphere. "We have zero water demand for any irrigation on site," said Martin Poirier, the project's principal landscape architect. The San Diego Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects www.asla-sandiego.org announced winners of its 2012 design awards, recognizing professional excellence for outstanding works of landscape architecture and environmental planning. Forty-nine landscape architectural projects designed by members of ASLA San Diego were submitted and reviewed by a multidisciplinary jury in November. The prestigious jury included: Calvin Abe, ASLA of AHBE Landscape Architects; Baxter Miller, ASLA of bmla Landscape Architecture; Joyce Cutler-Shaw, artist in residence, UCSD School of Medicine; David Mitchell, ASLA of San Jose City Parks & Recreation; Phyllis Van Doren, senior editor of San Diego Home/Garden Lifestyles; Rob Wellington-Quigley, FAIA of Rob Quigley Architecture & Planning. The project categories were environmental solutions; commercial, institutional and urban design; communications; residential; landmark; planning and analysis; and parks and recreation. Seven firms received awards: eight Merit Awards, three Honor Awards, and the top honor, the President's Award. Also recognized was the 2012 Community Grant Project, the Sikes Adobe Historic Farmstead.
