letters & book review Re Halprin Landscape Conservancy Re Prof. Buck Abbey's Sept. LASN Ordinance column: "Reducing Heat Island Effect by Code," Article # 17005 on LandscapeOnline.com: I always enjoy your insightful articles in LASN magazine. You have pointed me in the right direction many times. You had one a few years ago on tree mitigation that was particularly helpful. I'll be glad to send our code to modified you when finished. One big thing that I implemented a few years ago is a requirement for an irrigation audit. This has proven to be very successful in getting contractors to install an efficient system, regardless of what the irrigation drawings say. This along with a requirement for an ET controller allows the owner to at least start out on the right foot with regards to conservation. We are the only city We are very fortunate in the Portland, Oregon area to have a string of park spaces created by the late renowned landscape architect Lawrence Halprin: Pettygrove, Keller Fountain Park and Lovejoy Fountain Park, plus Source Fountain. Likewise, we are fortunate to have developers- John Russell and Bob Naito among them-who argued with the city of Portland that the Halprin parks are works of art in need of specialized care that regular maintenance workers cannot provide. On the Shelf in the Denver area that has this requirement. I have had to hold up several C of Os (Issuance of Certificates of Occupancy) along the way, but it has worked well. Again, thanks for the great articles and the helpful info. JOE SCHALK JSCHALK@CITYOFWESTMINSTER.US WESTMINSTER, CO. Re "George Toma: From Single A to the Super Bowl . . . and Then Some," article # 11137 on LandscapeOnline.com: George Toma is the "God" of turf. I had the great experience of working with George in Ft. Myers when he was with the Royals. He is also a character! We pulled a lot of practical jokes on players/people while we knew each other. He was always professional and trained many people in the art of turf MAC MCFATRIDGE SAFETY/MAINTENANCE ENG. COLORGRAPHICS SEATTLE Re Firms of Arizona and New Mexico: Schaafsma Design (Article #16946 on LandscapeOnline.com) This looks great and I am honored to be a part of this month's publication. Thank you for including me. PIETER SCHAAFSMA PRINCIPLE DESIGNER & FINE ARTIST SCHAAFSMA DESIGN FLAGSTAFF, ARIZONA 16 Landscape Architect and Specifier News management. I wonder if he still has that mongoose in the box. He used to scare the hell out of players with it. Great article for a great person. 1000 Details in Landscape Architecture A Selection of the World's Most Interesting Landscaping Elements FRANCESC ZAMORA MOLA, EDITOR PUBLISHER: FIREFLY BOOKS WWW.FIREFLYBOOKS.COM ISBN1770850406 PRICE: $29.95 HARDCOVER, 292 PAGES, 1,000 PHOTOS/ILLUSTRATIONS What makes a landscape unique? The Portland City Council finally agreed, and signed a contract last year with the Halprin Landscape Conservancy.
